Treatment for PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament) Sprain-Strain-Tear

Tears of the PCL - which stands for the Posterior Cruciate Ligament - occur far less frequently than those of the ACL, often because patients in Los Angeles County who have a PCL tear may not be aware of their injury. Compared to other ligament tears, PCL tears do not cause a high level of knee pain or knee instability. However, a complete rupture of the PCL can result in excruciating pain, and generally occurs during a sports-related, auto accident, or impact to a bent knee.

If there is no additional damage to the surrounding knee area or its ligaments, then most PCL tears are treated by non-surgical means during a visit to Encino Orthopedics Center. However, PCL tears do regularly occur in combination with other knee injuries, such as an ACL or a meniscus tear, so your injury should be closely monitored. If you continue to suffer knee instability or weakness, Dr. Reisch may recommend and perform minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to reconstruct the affected PCL via a ligament graft. Arthroscopic surgery at Encino Orthopedics Center is performed as an outpatient procedure.
