Treatment of Metatarsal Fractures at Encino Orthopedics

A metatarsal fracture refers to a fracture in the bones of the foot. A metatarsal bone exists for each of the five toes on each foot, as part of the forefoot - or the frontal, long portion of the foot. Metatarsal fractures are common injuries and are frequently caused in the San Fernando Valley during a fall, impact to the top of the foot, or if you accidently kick or trip over an object. Sometimes a metatarsal fracture can occur gradually, as a result of chronic stress to or overuse of the foot's forefront.

Symptoms of a metatarsal fracture include mild to severe pain that may inhibit the ability to put full weight on the foot; sometimes bruising, swelling, and tenderness may occur at the site of the metatarsal injury. To diagnose and treat a metatarsal fracture, it is essential to visit an orthopedic specialist who can properly assess a metatarsal fracture, particularly because fractures of this nature may be subtle and less obviously detected. Dr. Reisch will likely conduct a physical examine and may order imaging tests, such as an MRI or X-Ray, to understand the scope of the metatarsal break.

As for non-surgical treatment of a metatarsal fracture, splints, braces, and/or crutches are often utilized to stabilize and rest the foot while the healing process takes place. Injured metatarsal bones do not typically experience healing complications and often resolve on their own with the proper guidance of an orthopedic surgeon, proper rest, and physical therapy following the injury.
