Treatment for Labrum (SLAP) Tear at Encino Orthopedics
The labrum is a ring of firm tissue that works to stabilize the shoulder. Labrum tears are also called SLAP tears, which stands for "superior labrum, anterior to posterium," and references a labrum that has been torn or otherwise injured. Common causes for a labrum or SLAP tear include falls on the shoulder or on an outstretched arm, bracing yourself with your arm during an accident, lifting heaving objects, or through repetitive overhead activities that put chronic stress on the labrum.
The symptoms of a labrum or SLAP tear range from a pop or click sound in the shoulder area, pain when moving the affected arm overhead or behind, weakness and/or an ache of the shoulder. In order to diagnose a labrum or SLAP tear, at Encino Orthopedics, Dr. Reisch may use imaging technology, like an X-ray or MRI, to assess the severity of the tear. Arthroscopic surgery, a minimally invasive surgical method, may also help Dr. Reisch determine the full extent of the labrum injury and potentially repair and restore function to the labrum.
