Treatment for Forearm and Wrist Fracture at Encino Orthopedics

A wrist fracture is a break in one of the forearm's two bones. Wrist fractures are the most common bone break reported, and are especially common in athletes participating in contact sports. In addition, San Fernand Valley residents who suffer from osteoporosis are at a higher risk of experiencing a wrist fracture in the event of a collision or fall.

Though common, a wrist fracture may be complicated by other factors, including cases where multiple arm bones are fractured; arm ligaments are torn; or if the wrist's break extends to the wrist joint, as well. Symptoms of a wrist fracture include pain and tenderness when flexing the affected arm, swelling and bruising, and/or a deformed appearance of the wrist.

Treating a wrist fracture may be done surgically, or through non-surgical treatments, depending on the circumstances of your injury. Non-surgical treatment often prescribed by the expert orthopedic surgeons at Encino Orthopedics, includes bracing (possibly in combination with a sling) in order to immobilize the wrist while healing. In severe cases, surgery may be required to ensure the broken bones are properly rejoined and aligned. Physical therapy is normally necessary following a wrist/forearm fracture, in order to ensure that full strength and range of motion is restored.
