Treatment for Bursitis of the Shoulder

Bursitis of the shoulder affects the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion and lubricant at a frequent friction point at the top of the shoulder. Specifically, bursitis is considered inflammation (swelling) or irritation of the bursa sac and surrounding area, causing discomfort and a decrease in the shoulder's range of motion.

Shoulder bursitis is often caused by overuse or repeated stress. Common activities that may trigger or increase your risk of shoulder bursitis include: shoveling, painting, gardening, golf, baseball, and swimming. Even improper posture can aggravate the bursa and consequently cause inflammation and discomfort in the shoulder area.

Bursitis is commonly experienced in the shoulder and elbow, and the most common symptom is pain and discomfort in the affected area(s). The severity of bursitis pain can vary, and may also be compounded by a loss of your shoulder's range of motion. Treatment for shoulder bursitis includes rest, avoiding activities that incite the symptoms of bursitis, and icing of the affected shoulder.

After fully examining you shoulder and diagnosing bursitis of the shoulder, Encino Orthopedics Center's founder Dr. Reisch may prescribe other courses of treatment that range from steroidal injections to surgery - though surgery for bursitis is uncommon. Physical therapy to ease the pain and restore full range of motion of the shoulder is also a common non-surgical approach to treat bursitis of the shoulder.
