Treatment for Biceps Rupture at Encino Orthopedics
The bicep is an incredibly strong connective muscle stretching from the shoulder to the elbow. Ruptures of the biceps occur especially in older individuals, athletes, and weightlifters. Often bicep muscle injuries occur during an everyday activity, but may also occur as a result of a weakening and breaking down of the muscle over time, or a sudden injury.
When the bicep ruptures, an audible snap is usually heard, soon accompanied by pain, swelling, and a bulge in the upper arm where the torn muscle has bunched up. It's worth noting that sometimes the pain from a bicep rupture can ebb, even though the rupture persists.
In treating a bicep rupture, Dr. Reisch of Encino Orthopedics may examine the upper arm for visual signs of a tendon tear in the bicep, then will likely order scans or an X-ray to determine the extent of your tear and to confirm that no nerves or surrounding tissues were harmed. Sometimes a surgical procedure is required to repair a bicep rupture by reattaching the torn tendons. Rehabilitation following a bicep rupture surgical repair involves extended rest and physical therapy.
