Treatment for Ankle Sprains & Strains at Encino Orthopedics

An ankle sprain or strain typically involves a stretch and/or tear to the ligaments located in the ankle. Most people have endured a twisted ankle at some point in their lives, but when pain and swelling persists following an ankle twist, it is likely that you have suffered an ankle sprain. Ankle sprains are common and generally minor injuries, though it is possible to suffer a more serious ankle sprain that has the potential to cause longer-term joint pain in the region of the ankle.

Ankle sprains are typically caused by a sudden shift or turn of the ankle when the foot is planted, causing the ankle, foot, and lower leg ligaments to stretch or tear. Ankle sprains commonly affect Southern California athletes, as well as individuals amidst daily routines. The severity of an ankle sprain varies depending on the extent of the injury suffered, but an experienced orthopedic surgeon, who treats ankle sprains and strains regularly should examine injuries of this nature in order to prevent further complications.

Symptoms of an ankle sprain or strain include pain at the site of the injury, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and inability to put full weight on the injured foot. In extreme cases of ankle tears, it may be possible to hear or feel the tendon tear, or an accompanying popping or snapping sensation. In treating your ankle sprain or strain at Encino Orthopedics Center, Dr. Reisch will likely conduct a physical examination in conjunction with imaging technology, such as an X-Ray or MRI, in order to assess the severity of your ankle injury. Surgery is rarely required for an ankle sprain, but immobilization, rest, anti-inflammatory use, and physical therapy are often used as non-surgical treatment techniques.
