Treatment of Ankle Fracture - Broken Ankle at Encino Orthopedics

Three leg bones converge to form the ankle joint: the tibia, the fibula, and the talus. Several ligaments stabilize the ankle joint and allow it its range of motion and flexibility. When an ankle fractures it is usually due to direct impact to the ankle joint, in conjunction with an ankle ligament tear, or through severely rolling/twisting the ankle.

Signs that you have suffered an ankle fracture (broken ankle) include moderate to severe pain - though not necessarily localized to the exact area where the fracture occurred - along with the inability to put full weight on your foot. Swelling, bruising/discoloration, and tenderness are also common when you've broken your ankle. has occurred.

At the Encino Orthopedics Center in the San Fernando Valley, expert orthopedic surgeon Dr. Reisch will likely conduct a physical examination of the ankle, assess your related symptoms, and potentially order imaging tests, such as an X-Ray or MRI in order to determine the severity of the ankle fracture.

If the ankle fracture is not severe, Dr. Reisch will likely ensure that the fracture anklebone is properly aligned, then apply a splint or brace to immobilize and stabilize the injured ankle. If the ankle fracture is severe, and has caused the bones to become unaligned, surgery may be necessary to ensure proper healing and alignment occurs. Physical therapy is a common non-surgical route to ensure that the ankle, foot, and leg regain full range of motion, stability, and strength following your ankle injury.
